Located above the Columbia River along Highway 3B east of Trail, Montrose incorporated June 22, 1956. Its population of 1,030 (though the total population of the Lower Columbia (including Fruitvale, Montrose, Trail, Warfield, Rossland and Regional District Kootenay Boundary Areas A and B) totals 19,220) is primarily made up of workers and retirees of nearby Teck Lead-Smelter, Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital, Fortis BC, Wal-Mart and other local businesses. Seven different hummingbirds have been recorded in the area and Montrose is known for the excellent quality of its drinking water, winning silver deals in 2008 and 2009 Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting Competition.
